The Joyful Music Masquerade Mask is a delightfully festive and ornamental party mask. This mask is styled like a traditional jester’s cap with bells (called the cockscomb). The three flopped over points, known as liliripes, are complete with golden jingle bells on the tips.
The liliripes are designed to emulate antique parchment paper with sheet music written on them. The borders of both the liliripes and the eye-mask have a decorative gold and glitter trim. The eye-mask is blue and gold with swirling lines of golden glitter decorating it.
The masquerade dates back to ancient Greek festivals that were thrown to honor Dionysus, the god of wine, sex, fertility, and the theatre. The practice of wearing masks and costumes was shared among both the performers and guests of the festival, and was passed from Greece to Rome, and from Rome to Venice.
Masquerading is very popular at festivals, carnivals, and balls. Wearing a mask can be liberating, in that it allows you to reinvent yourself and adopt a new, different, or secret personality.
These beautiful masquerade masks are handmade of high quality paper mache by traditional artisans in Italy.
The ancient mask-making art form is alive and well today, and we are pleased to have this opportunity to share it with you.
